On May 28, the Department of Urban Planning and Design of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and the Hungarian Contemporary Architecture Centre are organising an international conference on the “Challenges of Rural Areas in the Danube Region” as part of the kick-off event of the Danube Ruralscapes and PlaceCRAFT Interreg Danube Region projects. In line with the objectives of the two projects, the event will focus on good practices and positive examples of sustainable and participatory renewal of the built, landscape and natural heritage of rural areas.
What are the available models for regional and local planning which take into account regional identity? How does the use of local materials and local knowledge relate to sustainability? Can a strategy aimed at preserving rural heritage and traditional townscape be competitive and profitable? How can local communities be involved in sustainable rural development?
Addressing these questions, the four thematic sessions of the conference will present 26 research and community projects in short and lively presentations. Speakers will include academics from Central and South-Eastern European architectural schools, architects developing innovative practices and representatives of civil society organisations. The leaders of the two new projects will discuss with the speakers how they can effectively address the challenges in rural areas of the Danube region in the international cooperation already established in the DANUrB projects.
A key objective of the organisers is to showcase to experts in Hungary exemplary initiatives from the neighbouring countries and the wider region, while also providing an opportunity for the international participants to learn about good practices developed in Hungary.
